The latest in our series of learning summaries, this summary highlights the main challenges, successes and lessons learned during an emergency project to rescue and reintegrate former child soldiers in the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The territory of Lubero in the North Kivu region of DRC has for some time been troubled by violence and waves of brutal fighting, which has provided fertile ground for the proliferation of armed groups. Our local partner Centre Résolution Conflits has a long track record of working with ex-combatants, including the rescue and rehabilitation of children who have been abducted and forced to fight or work for militias operating in the region.
As well as presenting the impact of the project, and the challenges and successes that arose form it, this summary also provides key recommendations of how to enhance the capacity of local organisations to better prevent child recruitment, and support reintegration.
