Peace Initiative Network (PIN) is a local organisation in Kano, Nigeria, that aims to prevent and manage violent conflict through advocacy and awareness-raising. Since its inception in 2004, PIN has been committed to conflict prevention, conflict management and youth development in Nigeria.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is home to over 250 ethnic groups and 500 languages. A legacy of British colonialism, heavy national reliance on oil production, governance issues and tensions within ethnic groups contribute to ongoing conflict dynamics. Violence has occurred between farmers and pastoralists, particularly over land. Nigerian civilians face economic inequality and political corruption, while our partners report that people no longer trust the government nor security architecture.
Armed groups like Boko Haram have brutalised local communities, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians – primarily children – and displacing millions. These actors have also contributed to regional food crises.
Local peacebuilding work focuses on stopping cycles of youth recruitment to terrorist groups and teaching conflict resolution strategies.

For example, PIN uses sports to develop friendships among young people across diverse ethnicities, cultures and religions and improve young people’s leadership, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
PIN also organises seminars, workshops and public campaigns to promote peaceful coexistence.
