Locally led Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning: A Decolonial Approach is our latest contribution on how to decolonise the peacebuilding and humanitarian sector. In this guide, we focus on practical ways to develop alternative systems of knowledge gathering, led by local peacebuilders.

The guide presents an approach to decolonising MEL developed through work with local partners since 2021. The framework is born of experimentation and reflection on what it means to decolonise the thinking and practice that have underpinned the sector’s learning approaches.

Gathering impact stories from peacebuilders doesn’t have to rely on Global North knowledge systems. Local peacebuilders can co-develop context-specific MEL frameworks to uncover the true impacts of interventions.

“The real success of this guide would be that it became the right way of doing MEL, not just the decolonial one.” Syed Ali Abbas, local peacebuilding expert.

This guide supports local peacebuilders and peacebuilding organisations to develop decolonial MEL frameworks that are responsive to their respective needs and context. By applying deep listening and dialogue tools and approaches and following the step-by-step guide, local peacebuilders and international organisations can transform existing MEL processes into ones that serve communities.
