Heard the one about the fish? Here’s what our co-founder Carolyn Hayman said at a recent TED Talk: “I guess you’ve heard the old aid slogan – ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ But what if the man knows how to fish, and in fact has been fishing all his life – and what he really needs is the knowledge to make 100 fishing rods so he can teach the rest of his village how to fish?”

Carolyn’s talk was part of the TEDxUCL conference on ‘Global Citizenship’, bringing together forward-thinking and innovative speakers working to catalyse change. Speaking to over 200 pupils, academics and TED talk fans, the event was bustling with new ideas and motivated people.

Cutting to the tough questions, Carolyn spoke about the major problems within the development system – addressing the issues around the ‘give a man a fish’ syndrome.  You can watch her thought-provoking Ted Talk below.
