Peace Direct is gravely concerned over the escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in El Fasher, Sudan.
El Fasher, the capital city of North Darfur, is home to over 1.7 million people, including 500,000 internally displaced people. They are facing starvation and a brutal siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) who have encircled the city.
Despite repeated efforts toward peace, and ceasefire attempts, recent clashes between armed groups and local communities have seen an increase in violence, which we condemn without reservation.
We support calls for immediate action to end the violence in El Fasher, and that ceasefire should be a priority. Communities are being cut off from essentials such as food and medical supplies, which is why we also support calls for humanitarian corridors to be reopened.
Peace Direct is in constant contact with Sudanese partners and local peacebuilders, and we will share further perspectives from them in the coming days. As always, it is their voices to whom we should be listening.
We are in solidarity with Sudanese people, partners and peacebuilders, and everyone affected by these recent appalling events.
