The recent decision to suspend funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has deeply affected local peacebuilders in Sudan, cutting off vital support at a time of urgent need.
We are Adeela, a Sudanese organisation committed to peace, social justice, and human rights. As one of Peace Direct’s local partners, we work directly with communities across Sudan to build resilience and drive positive change.
The consequences of the USAID cuts in Sudan have been devastating. We were forced to stop work on four major projects this year. More than half were focused on delivering urgent humanitarian support, at a time when Sudan is experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with ethnic violence, famine, and millions displaced.
The loss of funding meant we had to shut down many of our community kitchens, which had been providing free meals to families facing extreme hunger. These kitchens were often the only source of food for entire neighbourhoods.
The cuts have also severely limited our ability to operate across Sudan. It has become nearly impossible to continue delivering support at the scale required. Many grassroots initiatives, particularly in Darfur, Khartoum, and Eastern Sudan, can no longer be supported at the same scale. This means communities across the country are left without the humanitarian support they need to survive.
Sudan is currently facing one of the most complex humanitarian and political crises in its history. With the collapse of state institutions and the escalation of violent conflict, local peacebuilders are now the only trusted and accessible sources of support within communities.
Supporting communities in Sudan is not only about offering immediate humanitarian relief, but also about laying the groundwork for reconciliation, justice, and the restoration of social harmony. Cutting funding for local peacebuilding organisations like Adeela undermines both short-term survival and long-term stability for millions of people.
As a result, local peacebuilders are being stretched beyond capacity, facing burnout, resource shortages, and operational shutdowns.
A donation from you will help peacebuilders in Sudan and around the world to continue their lifesaving work: feeding families, supporting peacebuilders, and protecting communities from collapse..
Sudanese peacebuilders are among the last remaining lifelines for communities facing violence, famine, and displacement. At Adeela, we are calling for more advocacy with governments and donors to continue funding local peacebuilding in Sudan.
We urge the international community to provide rapid, flexible funding that will help local peacebuilders respond directly to urgent community needs. Governments need to build direct partnerships with local organisations like ours and fund community-driven initiatives which reach Sudanese people.
Supporting local peacebuilders in Sudan has never been more important! And you can help: By amplifying the voices of Sudanese peacebuilders like us to build a mass movement that believes peace is possible in Sudan.
The aid cuts are not just a financial setback for Adeela; they are a lifeline being pulled away from communities in need. Thousands of families have lost access to food, protection, and urgent support , at the very moment they need it most.
Together with Peace Direct, we are calling on governments and donors to act now, with rapid, flexible funding that allows local organisations to respond directly to urgent needs. Every delay costs lives. Every act of solidarity restores hope.
