People often comment on how powerless they feel to bring about real change in the face of such challenges. But there is a way. Peace is possible. And you have the power to build it, one person at a time. You can start right now by signing up to become a peacepartner assigned to a peacebuilder, someone like Rabiu.

Rabiu is 20 years old. He lives in Nigeria. And he used to be a member of Boko Haram.

I met Rabiu a few months ago in the dusty heat of a run down sports club, in one of the more dangerous parts of town.

The scars of war are written in his expression, and on his skin. His story is heartbreaking.

But Rabiu has found something that is helping him rebuild his life. He attends a local boxing club where he trains each week. It gives his days some structure and meaning, and the chance to meet others who find themselves in his position.

It’s an immeasurable sliver of hope in what can often feel like a hopeless situation. With every training session, Rabiu is becoming stronger, more hopeful and is moving on from a devastating past. Without this, Rabiu might have joined one of Nigeria’s other infamous gangs.

It is people like this that Peace Direct supports. And the difference is truly life changing. I’ve seen it first-hand.

There are many, many more people like Rabiu in the world today. Lots of them have not yet found the helping hand they need.

The shocking statistics, like one in every five people lives in a country shattered by violence and conflict, can seem hard to comprehend. The destruction war can bring to someone like Rabiu is not.

We should not despair in this situation. In every war zone there are brave people transforming their communities from the inside out.

There is a way to help. The answer could depend on you.
