Congo

120,000 people have been displaced by war since 2009 in the region Flory works. Many have had their land taken by force. Villagers cannot afford to go to the courts and some take justice into their own hands. Flory has set up community courts so locals can seek justice rather than vengeance – just as Mama Kibibi did.
Achievements: Five village-level courts set up, 100 volunteers trained, 35 conflicts resolved without violence.
In action
Mama Kibibi is 78 and lives in Kiliba in eastern Congo. Throughout the civil war she remained in her village, but as those who had fled violence began to return, Mama Kibibi was forced from her small plot of land. With the help of local peacebuilder Flory Kazingufu, she was able to seek justice. Through community courts set up by Flory, the villagers chose to respect her rights. Now Mama Kibibi has her land back and she can grow enough food to eat.
But Mama Kibibi is just one – last year Flory’s community courts resolved 35 cases, and with your help they can reach so many
With your help, Flory will set up three more community courts to look after 32 villages. The courts are run by volunteers, but to operate Flory must pay travel and food expenses. Make a gift of £7 a month, and over one year your gift could cover a whole month of volunteer expenses – so they are there to represent the rights of Congo’s most vulnerable people. Donate today
