SAMI: LATEST NEWS FROM KIRKUK

[ 18 March 2008 ] - “For the first time since 2005, peacebuilder Sami Velioglu has reported some good news from Kirkuk. Sami returned to Iraq over three years ago, to set up the Humanitarian Liaison Centre, helping innocent people in the region caught up in the conflict. Sami reports that the situation there has improved. People are sick and tired of killing, he says, and though there’s still looting and theft, there are fewer random killings and arbitrary arrests. A lot of factors have come together to create this change – better intelligence for the Coalition forces, for example – but also the fact that people can see that the Humanitarian Liaison Centre is there to help.” Read More

GILL HICKS TO CARRY OLYMPIC TORCH

[ 6 February 2008 ] - Peace Direct Ambassador Gill Hicks has been chosen to form part of the Beijing Olympic Torch relay. Torchbearers carry the flame on its long journey from Greece to Beijing for the opening ceremony on August 8th. Gill will join eighty Australians, including past and present Olympians who will take part in her country’s leg of the relay in April in Canberra. Read More

RAPID RESPONSE: 6 TALES FROM NEPAL

[ 22 January 2008 ] - Rapid Response Funds strip away red-tape and provide vital funds ready on the ground, empowering peacebuilders to respond immediately when violence breaks out. Established in March 2007, the Fund brings together three Nepali organisations (KIRDARC, SAATHI and YAPE), who have not previously worked together.
