Peace Cries Out is the first major event organized by Peace Direct since the global COVID-19 pandemic. The online event will be hosted by acclaimed slam poet, Charity Joyce Blackwell and will celebrate the outstanding contributions of youth peacebuilders around the world.  Charity has featured on Ted Talks as well as national television during the Super Bowl.

Guests will also hear from heroic local peacebuilders including the founder of the Darfur student movement, Quscondy Abdulshafi and International Humanist of the year award winner, Gulalai Ismail who founded Aware Girls in Pakistan, among others.

Peace Direct is an international organization committed to supporting local people around the world to prevent war. Our work supports local peacebuilders and activists with the funding and resources they need to carry out lifesaving work in their communities.

The event will also mark the presentation of the inaugural ‘Peace Cries Out Award’ to Representative Grace Meng (NY). The annual award recognizes people who have made a special and significant contribution towards building peace in the world.

Rep. Meng is a leader in advancing new US policy to support young people building peace in historically war-torn countries. She co-sponsored the reintroduction of the Youth, Peace and Security Act, the first comprehensive, national legislation to prioritize the inclusion of young people in conflict resolution.

On the importance of youth peacebuilders, Rep. Meng said:

“There are so many youths in the world today and we would benefit greatly from their voices, experiences, and views in matters of war and peace. The Youth, Peace, and Security Act is a once-in-a-generation shift in U.S. foreign policy that would bring youth voices to the table in conflicts around the world.”

US Executive Director of Peace Direct, Bridget Moix said:

"Young people are not only the world’s future peacebuilders, they are leaders right now all around the world.  While youth are often considered potential victims or recruits of war, we know they are also active change agents for building more peaceful, just societies – here in our own country and across the globe.  This award honors all those young people working for peace in their communities and the leadership of Rep. Meng in supporting them.  Now is the time for all of us to recognize and support young people building peace. "
