Reggie Hubbard of Active Peace Yoga joined us Sept. 14 for an online session to share how using yoga and meditation can help keep us emotionally healthy to develop our peacebuilding work. You can watch the video here.

Saba and Gulalai Ismail: 2020

Saba and Gulalai Ismail have dedicated their lives to peacebuilding, human rights advocacy and promoting women’s voices. They co-founded Aware Girls, an organization working to empower young women, counter violent extremism, and advocate for equal access to health, education and governance. “We can only have a peaceful world when all people are treated equally,” said Gulalai at the June 4, 2020 #peacetalks. violence interrupter: 2020

A #peacetalks on Jan. 24, 2020, featured Markee Young of Washington, D.C. He and other “violence interrupters” forge relationships in high-crime areas of the city to help settle disputes before they turn deadly. “It takes a village to raise a soul. It takes one person to save a life,” he told the audience.

Evening at the Dayton peace museum: 2020

Bridget Moix, Peace Direct’s U.S. executive director, spoke at the Dayton International Peace Museum on Jan. 17, 2020. An exhibit there displayed paintings by children and photographs showing daily life in Yemen. Visitors signed cards to send to the elementary school children:

Victoria Nyanjura: 2019

Victoria Nyanjura from Uganda shared her story at a #peacetalks at Eaton Workshop in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 13, 2019. She was abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army when she was 14 years old and held for eight years. After her escape, she became a champion for women survivors of conflict. “Pay attention to the stories you hear,” she told the audience. “If you listen and reflect, you’ll find that something can be done.”

Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders Awards: 2019

On Oct. 3, 2019, Peace Direct announced the winners of the seventh annual Tomorrow’s Peacebuilders Awards in Washington, D.C. The winners were: Joseph Tsongo of the Amani Institute, which helps young ex-combatants process trauma through theater in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Roula al-Khatib of Open Art Space, which provides children with art exercises and workshops in Syria; and Abdullah al-Suraihi of Youth for Homeland, which helps young people in rural Yemen develop skills and find alternatives to violence. Each received a $10,000 grant to contribute to their work. (Read more)

Saba Ismail: 2019

Saba Ismail, Pakistani human rights activist and co-founder of Aware Girls, discussed how anyone can be a peacebuilder at a #peacetalks on Sept. 20, 2019. “Every human can contribute towards peace somehow. You don’t have to study conflict studies to help. It can be a simple act because everyone has something to offer. It’s just about the individual’s will.”

Pints for Peace in Washington, D.C., and Ohio: 2018

On Sept. 20 and 21, 2018, Peace Direct teamed up with local craft breweries to support regional businesses and share our peacebuilding mission. To mark International Day of Peace, we hosted Pints for Peace events in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio. It was a great opportunity to connect community members and organizations working for social change.
