Abida lives in Kashmir, a beautiful region scarred by civil war. When she was five, local demonstrations exploded into full-scale fighting.

Over 400,000 people fled their homes. Those who were once neighbours became enemies. Riots and violence were part of Abida's upbringing.

At 20 she joined a women's support group run by Ashima Kaul. Many women have lost their husbands and sons to the fighting.

It is women who hold together the fabric of life - the families, homes and communities that remain. Yet women have little freedom in their lives and little say in any peace process.

Ashima's groups bring Hindu and Muslim women together to bridge the divide, share experiences and learn about their rights. She links these groups into a single collective voice, for women and for peace. As they grow in numbers and confidence, politicians can no longer ignore them.

Joining the group taught Abida about women's rights. She's now leading her local group where women can talk openly about violence of all kinds.

Ashima has set up five women's groups, focusing on women's rights, domestic violence and bringing peace to this volatile region.
