Children become soldiers because they are kidnapped, or more often because they have no other options in life. In war-torn eastern Congo, children are lured by promises of food, friendship and status. Local hero Henri Ladyi understands this – and knows that to break the cycle of violence these children must be given a real future. His programmes work across eastern Congo, not just rescuing the children, but also reducing the conflict and instability in their communities and helping villagers to find ways to support themselves. These are the frontlines of conflict and the work is sometimes dangerous but always vital.

Join the Wall of Hope
June 30 marks 50 years of independence in Congo and Henri is organising a celebration in Butembo town. MORE

Give a little every month
When Benjamin first came out of the bush Henri gave him food, civilian clothes and a place to stay. MORE
Benjamin and 13 other boys were trained to earn a living: Benjamin learned to mend shoes. They were also shown how to make money by rearing animals, and Benjamin is now the proud owner of a family of rabbits. This summer Benjamin is living with an uncle in a village and in September he hopes to return to school – which he has missed for three vital years. Henri budgets just £21 for each child that comes to him. A donation of £7 a month over a year could cover the cost of four children, like Benjamin, to leave the bush and learn a trade – so they can support themselves in peace. Donate today
