Non military options in Iraq

peace direct helped to convene the Amman Roundtable which produced eight recommendations on security in the Middle East to be presented to the G8 and NATO summits in June.

It's never been clearer that we need to look beyond military approaches to consider the human aspects of security - 'security as though people matter'. peace direct is a new organisation which supports people who put their lives at risk to develop non-violent initiatives in conflict areas, and works with policy makers who shape the environment in which these courageous and imaginative people operate.

Take Iraq: peace direct founder Scilla Elworthy helped to convene the Amman Roundtable which produced eight recommendations on security in the Middle East to be presented to the G8 and NATO summits in June.

In parallel, peace direct is helping to fund and support Sami Velioglu, a British Iraqi returning to Kirkuk to record and deal with human problems resulting from the war. By giving respectful attention and where possible redress, Sami seeks to prevent bitterness and hostility growing in civilian population.
