YAPE in action

YAPE gives local people someone to turn to when violence breaks out around them. They act as a hotline for peace – easily contactable and ready to act as soon as violence threatens. YAPE use a Rapid Response Fund. This accessible funding that means they can respond immediately to urgent conflict and help communities recover after the threat has diminished.

In the last year YAPE have made 22 interventions to ease local tensions and stop violence from escalating by bringing an end to political riots, preventing rebel soldiers from taking office by force and allowing children to return to school after an attack. In 2011 YAPE set up a freephone help hotline, so they are always on hand when needed. They now receive 20 to 30 calls a day from the the province of Kavre asking for rapid response assistant or to get in-depth information on conflicts accross the region.

The cost of a local organisation intervening before a dispute gets out of hand in Nepal is nothing compared to the potential cost of an international organisation picking up the pieces after a violent conflict. YAPE only need money to cover their communication and transport costs.
