Kashmir

Young people in Kashmir have grown up through 20 years of insurgency that has cost the lives of 47,000 people – sadly, for many violence has become the norm. 2010 saw renewed violence that cost over 100 lives as young people clashed with police and other officials. Many young people do not feel represented by their government and this frustration leads to violence.

Local peacebuilder Ashima is reaching out to young people across Kashmir. She brings them together and gives them a space where they can learn to discuss, debate and to struggle for their rights, without violence. Together they are lobbying the media, politicians and armed forces for a peaceful future.

With £8 I could bring 10 young people together every week, to replace prejudice and hatred with trust and compassion – Ashima, Kashmir

I’m just one woman, yet my conviction for peace in Kashmir gives me the strength to keep going – there is no other alternative.

8th March is the centenary of International Women’s Day, it’s a time to celebrate peace but also to remember all the women who live with war.

To mark the 8th of March, I’ve donated £8 to Peace Direct and I’m sending this to 8 of my friends
