Doro's Story
Doro supported the Escuela in Colombia for several years. However she took her commitment to supporting their work one step further by organising a triumphant music and comedy fundraiser in October 2007.
‘An evening of (not all) laughs’ was a brilliant success with over £1,500 raised.
Using her local contacts Doro put together a first class programme of performers, headlining with comedy poet John Hegley, whose act involving spoons and ping pong balls left the audience in stitches. Diego Brown and the Good Fairy sang weird and wonderful songs while Carole Satyamurti brought reflection and poignancy to the night by reading some of her poetry that particularly pertained to issues of women and war. Lots of people took leaflets about Peace Direct and said what a great charity it was to be supporting.
As well as charging for the tickets, Doro raised extra money by organising a bar and a raffle and she managed to save money by persuading loved ones to work as volunteers. Special thanks therefore to Zoe and Greg who did a really professional job on the bar, Ashley Gardner who put the sound system together, Doro’s three daughters and especially Aphra who helped putting up posters and leafleting.
