People work. Not paper work.
WHO WE ARE.
Peace Direct believes in the power of local peacebuilders. We, find, fund and promote their work because local people know what’s going on in their country. They know how conflict can be prevented and resolved. We believe local people should be at the heart of conflict resolution and we’re working towards that, talking to governments, international bodies and other charities.
Wherever there’s conflict there are local people trying to resolve it. People who understand why the conflict started, who’s involved and what might end it. They’ve moral authority in their own communities because of their courage and commitment so they have the credibility to persuade local people to trust and talk to each other.
Peace Direct works with and supports amazing people in some of the most dangerous places in the world. All of them come from different backgrounds and have dedicated themselves to making their own communities safer;
- Women in a market, keeping violence out by creating a forum where disputes can be resolved.
- Local businessmen, raising money to buy back weapons to reduce the arms in circulation.
- Young people setting up a radio station to broadcast anti violence messages across communities
- A former militia commander, using his influence to turn people away from violence.
People don’t always need money to start these initiatives. But to be effective in the long term they need resources to expand, to reach more people, to connect to people in power and create political as well as personal change.
That’s where funding from Peace Direct can make the real difference . Small amounts of money can go a very long way.
