People work. Not paper work.

WHAT WE DO.

Peace Direct finds, funds and promotes local people working for peace in conflict areas around the world. We give them funds to carry out the work they think is needed, not carry out some-one else’s plan.We provide moral and practical support.

Peacekeeping - UNMIL

Find

We look for individuals and organisations who live in the conflict area, who already have a track record of peacebuilding, but could do more with our help. We find them through networks, by visits to the field, recommendations, and increasingly through our own Insight on Conflict research. We talk to them before we fund them and usually start with small grants while we get to know them.

Fund

We raise funds from individuals, trusts and foundations, companies and governments. Funds from individuals are particularly important, because they give us the freedom to keep projects going in the gaps between other funding, or to start things off. They also let us to respond immediately to crises with extra funding – for example the post-election violence in Kenya in 2007.

Promote

We work with the media nationally and internationally because we think reporting war and conflict should include the perspectives of local people who are trying to build peace. All too often the start of a conflict is ignored by the international press until it’s a full blown crisis which means local people are seen as helpless victims instead of people who can shape their own future and security.

Our relationships with the people we fund are very personal, balancing a high degree of moral support and encouragement, from our staff and supporters, with accountability and effectiveness.
