How we're funded

Independence and flexibility

Peace Direct is an independent charity. In 2010-11 we were funded by public donations (23 per cent), trusts and foundations (42 per cent), and currently the UK government (35 per cent). This range of funding sources gives us the independence and flexibility to explore new approaches and react rapidly to conflicts.

It also means that we can match our partners’ needs to the right sort of funding – small and fast for an emergency, slower and more strategic for a long term programme. It’s one of the things that makes us really effective.

Individual supporters are crucial to this. We have around 2,000 individual supporters. But they provide something more than money – they show frontline peacebuilders that they’re not alone.

I will put your messages on the wall of my office, so I can see them every day, and know that there are people on the other side of the world who want peace as much as we do.

Become a supporter

We’re proud of the fact that two thirds of the trusts and foundations that funded us last year are not focused on peace. It means that we are drawing new funding into this essential work by emphasising, for example:

  • People helping themselves and each other.
  • Women and young people leading and benefiting.
  • Projects that are locally led, not designed by remote funders.
